From the village square in Girlan (at car park) you set off uphill in the direction of Schreckbichl, pass Ebnerhof up to the forest road and after the barrier straight on up to the signpost 'Wildermann Bühel, Montiggler Seen'.
You can continue along the forest road as far as the crossing and then turn first left uphill and then straight on in a southerly direction until you reach the lake. Or you can follow directions to the left and after a very steep climb up to the forest road where you first of all pass a bend going uphill and then a 90° bend on the left. Finally, you turn right to join a footpath and follow it to the crossing with a forest path. Follow the path through the woods on the left until it crosses the next forest path after half a kilometer. Then continue to the right for 50 m downhill, turn left onto a path for horses and continue downhill to a forest road then turn right to reach the small lake.
Continue on the left along the east bank until you reach the end of the lake and then on to Großer Montigglersee. Continue along the east bank until about 20 m before a barrier where a rather steep, wide track leads to the forest road. From here go to the right for about 50 m until you reach a tarmac road on which, after about 2 km, you come to the forest road 'Stein' and then continue on up to the tarmac road.
After the bend there is a steep track on the right that will take you to the next forest road. Continue downhill to a crossing on the right to the signpost 'Kleines Steintal'. Here there are three tracks on the left, but only the middle one will lead you to the road for Kreithersattel. Follow the road to the left for about 100 m until you reach the forest road (house) and continue on it until you reach the second signpost 'Rosszähne, Leuchtenburg'. From here continue on the route marked 13c, pass Rosszähne and then you reach the forest road for Kreithersattel. On this road go back to the signpost 'Rosszähne, Leuchtenburg' and this time take the direction 'Leuchtenburg'. The downhill run on the north side is very difficult (downhill VI). It is therefore better to go back to the forest road and at the left bend before the signpost follow on the right the route marked 13 downhill. The forest path leads into the forest road exactly at the point where the north departure of Leuchtenburg ends. Continue here in the direction Klughammer and Kalterer See.
At the lake turn right for the crossing for Kreither Sattel. Continue 50 m in this direction until you reach the first forest road (signpost: Frühlingstal), then continue on the route marked 20 through Frühlingstal. Cross a tarmac road and go on to the next, stay on the left and you will arrive at Montiggl. Go past tennis courts, leave the tarmac road immediately and turn left for 'Patersteig' No. 3a. Continue until after descending you come to a forest path. Turn right here for the main road to Montiggl, and on until you are directly opposite the entrance to the sports complex at Rungg. Cross the main street and go past the sports grounds heading north for Girlan.
