South Tyrol is known for its unique gastronomy. Its geographical location accounts for a symbiosis of Alpine and Mediterranean cuisine. Gourmet delights from South Tyrolean kitchens and cellars are the combined result of Tyrolean earthiness and Italian finesse.
Enjoy hearty dumplings, homemade “Schlutzer“ (pasta), “Schüttelbrot“ (Tyrolean speciality bread) and speck, mozzarella and tomatoes, pasta and risotto of all varieties, Italian pizza, strudel, apple cakes and “Strauben“ (Tyrolean speciality cake).

Specialities from South Tyrol
South Tyrolean cuisine is characterized by hearty rural fare. Speck, Schüttelbrot and Graukäse (a cheese) have been dished up in farmhouse kitchens since time immemorial.
Fruit- and wine-growing not only colours the landscape in the valleys but makes South Tyrol one of the most important apple-growing regions in Europe. South Tyrolean wines have won numerous awards and the white wines are considered among the best in Italy.
So-called “Törggelen“ parties (communal meals in wine cellars) are special local events. During harvest time, between September and December, many farmsteads—or so-called “Buschenschänken“ (rustic wine bars)—serve rustic specialities such as “Gerstsuppe“ (barley soup) accompanied by the new wine and roasted chestnuts.
